Lydia’s House is excited to open hiring for the second class of “Fellows” for our Dorothy Day Fellowship Program. The 2023-2025 applicants can choose from four positions, each with a unique focus:
- “Community Ministry” Fellow
- “Maternal and Family Health” Fellow
- “Non-Profit Leadership” Fellow
- “Early Childhood Education” Fellow
Every position will include mentoring in the work of Lydia’s House and in the fight against family poverty and homelessness, and all positions share the work of maintaining and staffing the shelter.
The positions will each have a duration of 24 months, include a living suite and a generous compensation package including
- A monthly living stipend
- Wellness funding for counseling, spiritual direction and retreats
- Connection to the larger Catholic Worker and Christian social justice movement through gatherings and shared experiences
- Meals with the community
- Communal prayer times and structures for accountability and growth
- Professional development funding and opportunities for learning
- Health Insurance via Ohio Medicaid
- Housing and utilities
- A program grant to create and implement new programming
- The option of taking classes at nearby Xavier University at a reduced rate.

The Lydia’s House Summer Internship is a temporary position, spanning approximately ten weeks from June 1- August 7, 2023.
Interns will be responsible for:
• Creating a safe, welcoming and hospitable environment for women in transition
and crisis, and their children
• Taking four shifts of house duty weekly, or 16 hours total + additional
responsibilities for a total of 32 hours of work plus on call and overnights
• Working with Ebony/Mary Ellen to plan meals, purchase food, reduce waste, and insure refrigerators and pantries are clean and stocked
• Enforcing household policies, especially those regarding curfew, technology
usage, and meal attendance
• Accompanying guests and sharing knowledge of community resources; helping
guests apply for programs/resources they qualify for
• Participating in household chore rotation
• Planning and implementing child enrichment/child care activities
• Providing transportation as needed
The summer intern will be provided with a private room, times of respite, $500 per month spending stipend, a monthly bus pass, access to the house van (occasional, and when approved in advance). They will also have housing and meals provided.
The summer intern will be expected to
• Be a regular participant in Christian community practices
• Be present at least 2 weekends a month
• Share responsibility for the on call phone
• Stay in the house overnight, unless arranged with other volunteers
• Eat meals regularly with the community
Interns will be screened and background checked. All volunteers will be expected to be in good mental health and able to be a pastoral presence for women in crisis.
