Advent Reflection on Hospitality

The word Advent comes from the Latin word “adventus”, which means “coming.” The season of Advent is the church’s way of getting ready for the birth of Jesus into this world, which we celebrate on Christmas Day. Advent just so happens to occur in this part of the world during the darkest time of the year, when the days are shortest and nights are longest. International Women’s Day at Xavier

On March 15th, members of the Lydia’s House community attended the International Women’s Day event at Xavier University, which featured a dinner, panel, and discussion on “Building from the Ground Up: Examining Women’s Roles in Collaborative Partnerships & Community Building.” We were glad to be able to buy a table to support the event at Xavier.  We were especially enthusiastic about this event because two of our community members were featured on the panel: Sylvia Chemweno, our summer intern from last summer, and Quanita Roberson, our house counselor. Advent and Christmas update

December at Lydia’s House was full of fun Advent and Christmas activities! So, here are some of our photos from the holiday season. The house went on two outings, first to the Children’s Museum,                 and then to the Cincinnati Zoo.                   We painted Christmas ornaments, made some Christmas gifts, decorated Christmas cookies and stockings:                         And on Christmas Eve, we had a dinner, a small prayer service with hymns, and a gift exchange:
